An O-ring is a sealing element of the circular or toroidal section and has symmetric geometry. O-rings are the most widely used type of rubber seal gasket. Rubber O Ring Seals are simple in their conception but with an impressive capacity for use in complex applications, giving them exceptional versatility. They act by evenly distributing the pressure to which they are subjected, thus obtaining a perfect rubber seal.
O-rings are used to block a path that could allow liquids or gases to escape. The O-ring is placed in a groove to hold it in place and then compressed between two surfaces. By squeezing the O-ring, it leaves no more room to move and it blocks the path of the liquid or gas you are trying to seal in place.
When the system is under pressure, the O-ring is squeezed against the opposing walls of the groove, maintaining a perfect seal even at very high or very low pressures. The materials used to make O-Rings (elastomers) are naturally elastic and want to regain their original shape, so when the pressure stops, they spring back to their original position, keeping the seal and ready for the next cycle.
